Emirates Group Sees Record Profit
Emirate Group has posted a record profit increase of 248% despite the global recession. The Emirates Group, which includes Emirate Airline and Dnata, saw its profits grow to AED4.2 million for the financial year ended March 2010. Passenger numbers for Emirates Airline grew 21% to 27.5 million passengers.

Bristol Airport Wins Clearance For Expansion
Bristol airport has won clearance to almost double the number of annual passengers it handles. The green light came as BAA dropped plans to build new runways at Heathrow and Stansted following opposition by the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government. The expansion plans are to be focused around the existing site and not involve an additional runway or terminal.

Lufthansa Takes delivery of First A380
Lufthansa has taken delivery of its first Airbus A380, with a new-look first class cabin. Based at Frankfurt, the 526-seater Airbus will take the German national football team to Johannesburg on June 6 for the World Cup. It will then enter scheduled service with Lufthansa on June 11 on the Frankfurt – Tokyo route.

Bangkok Curfew To Remain For Now
Offices, schools and businesses have reopened in Bangkok, days after a violent end to weeks of protest. The military has said it would recommend a curfew remain in force in Bangkok and 23 provinces for another week. Luzi Matzig, CEO of Asian Trails, said, Skytrain and the subway are back in operation and sightseeing tours are again being conducted.

Hopes Raised As Iceland Volcano Cools Down
The Icelandic volcano which has caused chaos for the travel industry in recent weeks has stopped spraying ash into the sky. Officials in Iceland said there is currently little activity from the volcano and no signs of the ash cloud which has caused airspace closures since mid-April.

Stena Deploys First New Super Ferry
Giant new Stena super ferries will add 30% more capacity on the Harwich-Hook of Holland route this year. The first of the two 1.200-passenger vessels entered service on Sunday 16th May this will be followed by its sister ship in mid-October. The company has invested more than £375 million in the two car ferries – Stena Hollandica and Stena Britannica – which can each carry 230 cars and 300 freight vehicles.
