BA to Train Strike Breakers as Cabin Crew

British Airways may train cleaners and baggage handlers as cabin crew in a bid to thwart a strike threat. British Airways boss Willie Walsh, in a letter to all BA workers, called for volunteers “to back BA by training to work alongside cabin crew who choose not to support a strike, so we are ready to keep our customers flying as much as we can if this strike goes ahead”

£115M Budget Hotel Boom for Travelodge

Travelodge has unveiled a £115 million UK expansion plan for 2010 which will create 500 jobs. The budget hotel chain plans to open 26 new hotels, adding more than 2,000 rooms. New openings are planned for Edinburgh, London, Aberdeen and Chichester, the new openings will take Travelodge to more than 400 UK properties representing over 30,000 rooms.

Avis to Charge for No-Shows

As from 1st February Avis will be charging customers £40 for bookings that are not cancelled if not required. The non cancellation fee is 100% avoidable if the reservation is cancelled or modified any time prior to the time of pick up.

JAL files for Restructuring

Japan Airlines has filed for court-led restructuring with the Tokyo District Court. The Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp (ETIC) of Japan said it had decided to support the restructuring of JAL, Asia’s top carrier by revenue. JAL will revitalize its unprofitable operations with a capital injection from the agency, and by cutting its workforce and routes, ETIC said. Under JAL’s revamp plans, the carrier will reduce its capital to zero and ask for a debt waiver worth Y730 billion on a group basis, whilst cutting costs by reducing its workforce by 15,700 staff.

Oxford to gain £250M New Rail Line

A £250 million new line to Oxford will be the first new rail link from London to a major British city since 1910. Chiltern Railways has unveiled plans for the fast line between Marylebone and Oxford for completion in 2013, construction is expected to start next year and is estimated to last for approximately two years.

Ryanair Cuts Summer Dublin Capacity

Rising charges and a Euro 10.00 tourist tax has been blamed by Ryanair for cutting summer capacity at Dublin airport by 20%. The cuts come a week after Bmi announced the closure of its Dublin base and a reduction in its Dublin-Heathrow flights from seven to four this summer. Ryanair expects total traffic at Dublin airport to fall by two million to 18 million this year.
